The Witcher: Gwent - The Card Game
The minigame that ate the game it was in.
Gwent began as a distraction inside The Witcher 3 and became the thing a great many players actually did with their evenings, to the mild despair of the people who wrote the main quest. This is the physical version: two players, three rows, and a hand of cards you do not get to refill between rounds.
That last part is the whole design. There are three rounds and you must win two, but your hand is dealt once - so throwing everything at round one wins it and leaves you with nothing for the rest. Knowing when to pass and concede a round you were never going to win is the skill, and it is the reason the video-game version had such a long tail.
