The Fall of the Rebel Angels (Bruegel) 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

Painted in 1562, and still the strangest thing in the room five centuries later.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder filled this canvas with rebel angels being cast out of heaven, and rendered them mid-transformation into an inventory of things that should not exist: fish with legs, armoured insects, creatures assembled from unrelated parts. It hangs in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels and it is genuinely unsettling in person. Bruegel was working in the shadow of Bosch and arguably out-did him here.

Part of Clementoni's Museum Collection. As a puzzle it is relentless: there is no repeated texture and no restful area, because every square inch contains a different invented animal. Slow, absorbing, and worth framing.
