The Op have been making licensed chess sets for years and the Mario one is the best seller for obvious reasons: Bowser, Peach, Yoshi, Toad and the rest as sculpted pieces, in a collector's package built to sit out rather than live in a cupboard.

Underneath the sculpts it is ordinary chess, which matters more than it sounds. It is a genuinely good way to teach a child the game, because a knight is an abstraction and Yoshi is not. The rules in the box are standard chess rules; nothing has been simplified.
