The problem with teaching a five-year-old chess is that the pieces are abstractions and the rules arrive as a list. Story Time Chess solves it the obvious way once somebody has thought of it: every piece gets a character and a story, and the way it moves falls out of the story rather than out of a diagram.

The pawns are children who can only step forward. The rook is a lazy king in a bathtub who slides in straight lines. It is silly and it works, and the point is that a child who learns this way is playing real chess on a real board by the end - nothing has been dumbed down, just introduced in an order a small person can hold.
