106 numbered tiles, four racks, and a game that has quietly sold in the tens of millions since 1977 without ever needing a marketing campaign. Everybody's family has a version of it, usually in a slightly battered box, usually with one tile missing.

The single idea that makes it work is this: you may rearrange anything already on the table, as long as everything still forms a valid set by the time you take your hands away. That one permission turns a straightforward rummy game into something you can spend four minutes staring at while everybody else waits, hunting for the sequence that lets you dump six tiles at once. It teaches in ninety seconds and it never quite gets old.
