Matt Leacock and Rob Daviau took the best-known co-operative game in the hobby and gave it twelve months of story. You play through a year in sequence; cities that fall stay fallen, characters pick up scars, and the rules change permanently as sealed boxes open. Things get stuck to the board. Cards get torn up. It does not go back in the box the way it came out.

Widely held to be one of the best board games ever designed, and the reason is structural: because the stakes carry forward, a loss in March genuinely hurts in July. Each session runs 45 to 60 minutes and the campaign is 12 to 24 games depending on how badly it goes. Keep the same group — the whole design assumes continuity, and a substitute halfway through misses most of it.

Please note: a legacy campaign. Components are permanently altered during play and the game cannot be reset.

Perfect for: a group of two to four who can actually commit to a dozen evenings, and who like being told bad news.
