Eighteen thousand pieces of Ludwig II's fantasy castle in the Bavarian Alps, which is Ravensburger's largest format and one of the largest puzzles made by anyone. It arrives as four bags of roughly four and a half thousand pieces each, and finishes at 276 by 192 centimetres — wider than a king bed and a good deal wider than most dining tables. The image is the castle from the classic approach, forest below and mountains behind, which is the view every photograph of the place has used since 1886 because it is the one that works.

There is no technique that makes this quick. The four bags are the only mercy, letting you work one quadrant at a time rather than facing all eighteen thousand at once, and Ravensburger's die-cutting means the pieces do genuinely only fit where they belong. Sorting alone will take an evening. People who finish these tend to board and frame them, because the alternative is breaking up several months of work and putting it back in a box.
