Magic: The Gathering – Murders at Karlov Manor Play Booster Pack
Ten guilds, a great deal of motive, and a body.
Magic went to Ravnica and wrote a murder mystery on top of it. A string of killings has the city on the edge of chaos, the guilds are turning on one another, and the set casts you as an investigator working the case. Alquist Proft runs the detective end of it; Kaya, Kellan, Etrata, Massacre Girl, Rakdos and Vannifar are all in the frame somewhere. It is noir fiction applied top-down to a plane Magic had already spent two decades building, which is why it works.
Released 9 February 2024 and still Standard legal. Disguise lets you cast a card face down for three mana as a 2/2 with ward 2, turning it face up later for its disguise cost. Cloak does something similar from elsewhere, putting a card onto the battlefield face down as a warded 2/2. Collect evidence exiles cards from your graveyard totalling a given mana value, suspect gives a creature menace and stops it blocking, and Case enchantments sit there until you meet a condition, then stay solved permanently. Investigate returns, with its Clue tokens.
A footnote for anyone who tracks these things: this was the first Magic set sold in Play Boosters, which replaced Draft and Set Boosters across the whole line.
Each pack holds 14 cards — 6 or 7 commons, 3 uncommons, a wildcard of any rarity, at least one rare or mythic rare, one traditional foil, and a land — plus a token, art or helper punch-out card.
Please note: this is a single sealed booster. Contents are random and no specific card is guaranteed.
Perfect for: anyone who has ever worked out the killer in the first twenty minutes and then said nothing, because ruining it would be worse than being right.
