Magic: The Gathering – Foundations Play Booster Pack
The set built to still be here in five years.
Foundations is not a story set and does not take place anywhere in particular. It is Magic's deliberate entry point — roughly half reprints and half new cards, drawn from across the game's existing worlds, chosen for being clear and easy to understand rather than clever. Ajani, Kaito, Liliana, Chandra and Vivien are all in it, alongside legends like Giada, Zimone and Tinybones.
Released 15 November 2024, and this is the part worth knowing: Wizards have stated Foundations will remain Standard legal until at least 2029, and intend to reprint it annually across that window. Every other Magic set rotates out of Standard after roughly three years. This one does not, which makes it the least risky Magic purchase on the shelf if you are building toward something and do not want it invalidated.
There are no new mechanics. It leans instead on the game's long-serving keywords — flashback, kicker, landfall, morbid, prowess, raid, threshold — which is the point. If you learn Magic here, what you learn keeps working.
Each pack holds 14 cards — 6 or 7 commons, 3 uncommons, a non-foil wildcard of any rarity, at least one rare or mythic rare, a traditional foil wildcard, and a land — plus a token or art card. The land slot is generous by Magic's standards: a quarter character lands, half common dual lands, a quarter basics.
Please note: this is a single sealed Play Booster. Contents are random and no specific card is guaranteed. Foundations Jumpstart Boosters are a different product — 20 cards, half a deck, sold separately.
Perfect for: the person who keeps meaning to learn Magic properly and has been put off by the sense that they have already missed fifteen years of it.
