Two traders, one market, and a running argument about when to sell.

You and your opponent are the two most successful traders in Jaipur, competing for an invitation to the Maharaja's court. Each turn you either take goods from the market or sell them — and that single decision, repeated for twenty minutes, turns out to contain an entire game.

How it works

The market holds five cards. On your turn you take one, take several by swapping cards back, or take all the camels — or you sell a set of goods for rupees. The catch is that goods are worth more the earlier they're sold, and selling three, four or five at once earns a bonus token on top. So every turn is the same question: cash in now for a certain profit, or hold on and risk the price dropping while your opponent clears the market?

The camels are the clever bit. They're worthless as points, but they let you sweep multiple goods from the market in one go — and whoever holds the most at the end takes a bonus. Taking camels feels like doing nothing. It usually isn't.

Why it's the two-player benchmark

Sébastien Pauchon's design has been the answer to "what's a good game for two?" for over fifteen years, and nothing has really displaced it. Rules take three minutes. A round takes ten. You play best-of-three for the Seals of Excellence, which means a full match runs about half an hour and almost always ends in a rematch.

It's the game we hand people who say they don't have anyone to play with. You only need one other person, and they don't need to like board games yet.
