Horrified: Universal Monsters
Seven monsters. One town. No sequel budget.
The Universal horror films built the modern monster vocabulary between 1931 and 1954, and this box contains all of them at once: Dracula, the Wolf Man, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, Frankenstein's monster and his Bride, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Seven sculpted miniatures, a town board, and a slowly dawning sense that you have taken on rather more than you planned for. You choose which monsters turn up and how many, and that choice is the entire difficulty dial. Two of them is a pleasant evening. Four is a situation.
It is fully cooperative, and each monster carries its own defeat condition, so a four-monster game is really four separate puzzles running at once against a single shared clock. You spend actions moving, gathering items and escorting terrified villagers to safety, and then the monsters move and the terror track climbs. The cruelty sits in the item deck: it is finite, running it down advances the monsters, and the thing you need is reliably three tiles away from where you are standing. Around an hour, easy to teach, and properly tense once you stop playing it on easy.
Perfect for: Anyone who owns a boxed set of black-and-white monster films and has actually watched two of them. Here is the excuse.
