Dungeons & Kittens RPG: Core Rulebook
All the peril of a dungeon crawl, and considerably more napping.
A roleplaying game set in a wholesome post-apocalyptic medieval world, in which the adventurers are kittens and the magic is meowgic. Edge Studio have played the whole thing entirely straight, which is what saves it — the world has proper lore, the threats matter, and nobody winks at the camera. The book is a 288-page hardback, which is a serious object to hand to a child who has previously only seen a rulebook as the thing adults argue over.
It is built for people who have never run a game before. Character creation, the magic system and the setting are laid out in order rather than scattered across chapters, there are pre-generated kittens for tables who want to be playing inside ten minutes, and four complete adventures to run before anyone has to invent anything themselves. The age 8 rating is honest rather than optimistic — these rules are genuinely lighter than D&D, not D&D with a friendlier cover.
Perfect for: The parent who has been quietly waiting for an excuse to run a roleplaying game, and has now been handed one by an eight-year-old who thinks it was their idea.
