Lake Como is a glacial lake in Lombardy shaped like an inverted Y, over four hundred metres deep, and ringed by villas built by people who did not need to worry about the cost. The framing device here is the balcony: you are looking out through ironwork and planting rather than at the lake directly, which is a well-worn composition because it works.

The ironwork and foliage in the foreground give you sharp detail to start with, and the lake and far shore are the long low-contrast stretch that follows. This is the HQ Compact edition in the smaller box, distinct from the HQ Collection version of the same image.
