Zeus on the Loose

Mental arithmetic, disguised as Greek mythology, disguised as a game about stealing a small plastic god.

Zeus has wandered off from Mount Olympus and everybody wants him. Players take turns adding cards to a shared pile, keeping a running total out loud, and whenever the total hits a multiple of ten the player who got it there snatches the Zeus figurine off the table. Reach 100 and whoever is holding him takes the round.

The gods are what turn it from a drill into a game. Each has an ability — Apollo, Hermes, Poseidon and the rest all bend the total in their own direction, so a child who has been quietly counting can be undone by somebody who just plays Hades at the right moment. It is unashamedly an addition-and-subtraction exercise and children play it voluntarily, which is the entire trick. Spell out ZEUS across four rounds to win.

Perfect for: Parents doing maths practice by stealth, and Year 3 teachers who have run out of ideas by August.
