A 4X game where nobody rolls a die and nothing is left to chance, which is either the best or worst news you have had all week.

Voidfall is what happens when you take the sprawl of a space 4X game and rebuild it with euro-game discipline. David Turczi and Nigel Buckle's design drops the dice entirely: combat is deterministic, resolved by comparing what you brought against what is there, so a battle you lose is a battle you miscalculated. Mindclash's production is the usual absurd standard — the box is heavy enough to be a moving hazard.

It runs in two modes. Cooperative, where the players hold the galaxy against the Voidborn together, or competitive, where you are also scoring against each other. Either way the clock is the real opponent: focus cards drive the round structure and there are never enough actions. Expect two to three hours once everyone knows what they are doing, and considerably longer the first time. This is the deep end, and the solo mode is genuinely excellent.

Perfect for: The person who liked Twilight Imperium but wished it were shorter and had less shouting.

1–4 players | 120–180 minutes | Age 14+
