The Traders of Genoa

A trading game where the actual game is talking people into things.

Genoa, at the height of its powers as a Mediterranean trading republic. One player moves the merchant through the city each turn, landing on buildings — the market, the bank, the palace, the guild halls. Here is the twist: that player can only use one of those buildings themselves. Everything else is for sale, auctioned off to the rest of the table.

So the whole game becomes negotiation. Package deals, side payments, offers of future help that may or may not survive contact with reality. Rüdiger Dorn's 2001 design remains one of the finest pure haggling games ever put in a box, and it plays completely differently depending on who is sitting around it.
