Santorini is the rim of a caldera left by one of the largest eruptions in human history, around 1600 BC, violent enough that it may have ended Minoan civilisation on Crete. The villages sit on the cliff edge looking down into the flooded crater, which is why the view is so dramatic and why the drop behind the postcard is several hundred metres.
