RuneQuest: Starter Boxed Set
Bronze age myth, a rules system older than most of its players, and absolutely no elves as you understand them.
RuneQuest has been running since 1978 and remains the great alternative to the dungeon-crawling tradition. It is set in Glorantha, a world built on myth rather than medieval Europe — gods who are also runes, ancestors you can actually talk to, and duck people, who are not a joke. Chaosium's starter box is the way in: rules, pre-generated adventurers, dice, maps and a solo adventure to teach you before anyone else has to turn up.
Mechanically it is percentile-based and unforgiving. Combat is fast and genuinely dangerous, there are no character levels, and you improve by doing rather than by accumulating experience points. Magic is everywhere and everyone has some, which changes the texture of a session entirely. Expect a slower, stranger, more grounded game than the mainstream, and a setting with more depth than you will ever use.
Perfect for: The group who have played the big one for years and want to find out what else is out there.
