Reversi

A minute to learn, and then quietly the rest of your life.

Reversi was invented in England in the 1880s and later repackaged as Othello, which is the name most people know. The rule is singular: place a disc so that you trap a line of your opponent's between two of yours, and every disc in that line flips to your colour. Whoever has more discs at the end wins.

What makes it deceptive is that having more discs mid-game is usually bad. A large lead early means you have committed to positions your opponent can turn against you, so strong play often looks like losing until the last dozen moves. The corners cannot be flipped, which is where the entire strategy actually lives. Ultra-thick board at 36.5cm square with 64 two-sided pieces.
