Scrabble, if Scrabble had no words in it and nobody could argue about the dictionary.

One hundred and eight wooden tiles in six colours and six shapes, and a single rule: every line you build must share one attribute and differ in the other. All red, all different shapes. All circles, all different colours. That is the entire game, and it is enough.

Scoring runs on line length, with a Qwirkle — a completed line of six — worth double. The tension is that finishing a line for yourself often opens it for the person after you, so the good players spend most of the game deciding what not to play. Teaches in about ninety seconds and works across a very wide age range, which is why it has stayed in print for twenty years. Wooden tiles, not cardboard.
