Orcia Valley Tuscany 1000 Piece Puzzle

The bit of Tuscany that every screensaver has been quietly copying for twenty years.

The Val d'Orcia is a UNESCO World Heritage site south of Siena, listed specifically because it is a working agricultural landscape that was deliberately reshaped during the Renaissance to look the way it does. The rolling wheat, the isolated farmhouses and the avenues of cypress were, in a real sense, art directed. Knowing that makes it slightly less irritating that it photographs so well.

Landscape puzzles live and die on their sky and their fields, and this one has plenty of both. The cypresses and buildings give you anchors, and then there is a long middle stretch of graduated gold and green where shape does most of the work. Ravensburger cut every piece individually, which is exactly what that stretch requires, and their Softclick fit means assembled sections survive being moved. Finished size is 70 by 50 centimetres.
