My First Castle Panic

Castle defence for people who cannot yet read the word castle.

The same idea as the grown-up game — monsters come out of the forest, you work together to stop them — rebuilt so a four-year-old can play it without an adult reading every card. Everything runs on colour and shape matching: a monster sits on a space, and you send out the defender whose colour and shape fit. No text anywhere.

It is genuinely co-operative, which at this age matters more than it sounds: nobody is knocked out, nobody loses individually, and a four-year-old and a seven-year-old can play the same game without one of them being bored. Twenty minutes, which is about the length of a four-year-old.

Perfect for: a first proper board game, and parents who would rather not read forty cards aloud.
