Melbourne's, and now everybody else's, whether Melbourne likes it or not.

The W class went into service in 1923 and some of them are still running on the City Circle, which makes them among the oldest trams in daily use anywhere in the world. Timber bodies, drop-centre entrances, and a shape that has become shorthand for the whole city. Retired W class cars have ended up as cafes, as art installations, and in one case parked outside a museum in Seattle.

A pleasingly odd subject for a metal kit, and one of the few in the range that is unmistakably Australian. Laser-cut stainless steel, tab-and-slot assembly, no glue or paint. The long flat sides and the roof detail assemble easily; the bogies and the trolley pole are the parts that want tweezers. Bare steel on a stand.

Perfect for: Anyone who has left Melbourne and become sentimental about it from a distance.
