A butterfly, if butterflies had been invented in Birmingham in 1885.

The steampunk line takes ordinary subjects and rebuilds them out of gears, rivets and brass fittings that serve no mechanical purpose whatsoever, which is the entire point of the genre. Here it is a butterfly: recognisable wing shape, but the veins have become linkages and the body has become a boiler. It is the one range in the Metal Earth catalogue where the bare steel finish is not a substitute for colour but the actual intended look.

The wings carry a lot of fine cut detail and are the reason to buy this one. They are also thin and easy to crease, so work slowly and hold them by the edges. Laser-cut stainless steel, tab-and-slot assembly, no glue or paint. Tweezers essential. Finishes on a stand.

Perfect for: Anyone whose taste runs to cogs on things that would not have cogs.

Laser-cut steel | No glue required | Age 14+
