Metal Earth: Star Wars R2-D2

A character with no face and no dialogue who still gets more sympathy than most of the cast.

R2 is a cylinder, a dome and three legs, and somehow carries an entire performance on servo noises and a rotating head. The design has barely changed since 1977 because there was nothing to fix. It is also, structurally, one of the simplest shapes in the whole Star Wars catalogue, which is exactly why building one out of curved steel panels is more interesting than it sounds.

Rolling a flat sheet into a clean cylinder without kinking it is the entire challenge of this kit, and it is a genuinely satisfying thing to get right. Laser-cut stainless steel, tab-and-slot assembly, no glue or paint. The dome and the leg detail follow easily once the body is true. Tweezers recommended.
