An aeroplane that killed more of its own pilots in training than the enemy managed in combat.

The Camel shot down more aircraft than any other Allied fighter of the First World War and was, by every account, vicious to fly. All the mass was packed into the front seven feet, and the rotary engine's torque meant it turned right far faster than it turned left, which killed novices and made experts lethal. It is also the aeroplane a beagle flies on top of a kennel, which has done more for its fame than the combat record.

Biplanes are the most satisfying subject in this range because the struts and rigging give the finished model real structure. Laser-cut stainless steel, tab-and-slot assembly, no glue or paint. The two wings and their interplane struts are genuinely fiddly and want tweezers, patience and good light. Finishes in bare steel on a stand.

Perfect for: Anyone who wants a build that fights back a bit.

Laser-cut steel | No glue required | Age 14+
