Metal Earth: B-17 Flying Fortress

Named by a journalist, not the manufacturer, and the name stuck harder than the aircraft did.

The B-17 earned its reputation less for what it could do than for what it could absorb. Crews came home in aircraft missing engines, tail sections and large parts of the fuselage, which is how a heavy bomber ends up remembered with something close to affection. Boeing built nearly thirteen thousand of them. The shape, all glasshouse nose and gun positions, is instantly readable from any angle.

The kit is laser-cut stainless steel, punched out of flat sheets and assembled by folding parts and twisting tabs through slots. No glue, no solder, no paint. The four engine nacelles and the tail assembly are where the patience goes, and tweezers are not optional. It finishes in bare steel on a stand, which suits an aircraft that spent its career unpainted on the underside anyway.
