Medici The Dice Game

Knizia's auction classic, folded down into a pad and a handful of dice.

Renaissance Florence, a wharf full of goods, and three rounds in which to load your ships better than anybody else manages to. Money comes from having the most valuable cargo when a round ends, and from cornering the majority in each type of good across the whole game — the same double pull that made the original Medici such a difficult thing to put down.

The auctions are gone, replaced by dice selection, and the trade is a fair one: you lose the theatre of bidding but you gain a game that sets up in a minute and finishes in half an hour. Everything gets marked on a sheet, so there's nothing to knock over. There's a solo mode too, and it's considerably better than solo modes bolted onto small games usually are.

Perfect for: The end of an evening, when the big game has finished and nobody quite wants to admit they're going home yet.
