Woodland creatures, beautifully drawn, quietly competing for real estate.

A forest city where the residents are squirrels, hedgehogs and mice, rendered in the artwork that sells most of these copies before anyone has read a rule. James A. Wilson's design runs across four seasons of a single year: you send critters out to gather twigs, resin, pebbles and berries, then spend them on the buildings and characters that make up your city. The three-dimensional Evertree in the middle of the table is entirely unnecessary and nobody has ever once objected to it.

It is worker placement and tableau building at the same time. The trick is that a building unlocks its matching character for free, so a well-sequenced city ends up playing cards it never paid for. Each season returns your workers and hands you more of them, so the pace lifts as you go and the final season is where the engine finally does what you built it for. Forty to eighty minutes, and genuinely approachable at 2.8.

Perfect for: Anyone who has bought a game with their eyes and then been pleasantly surprised by the rules.
