Dragomino

Kingdomino for five-year-olds, and the rare children's game adults do not have to pretend to enjoy.

Dragomino takes the tile-matching of Kingdomino and strips it back to something a five-year-old can run unaided. You lay tiles to match terrain, and where two matching halves meet you get to look under a dragon egg. Sometimes there is a baby dragon. Sometimes there is a cracked shell and nothing at all. Most dragons at the end wins. It took the Kinderspiel des Jahres in 2021 and deserved it.

What makes it work as a first game is that the decision is real but small. There is a genuine choice about which tile to take, and a genuine reason to want the good one, but no reading, no arithmetic beyond counting dragons, and no way to fall so far behind that it stops being fun. Ten minutes, and the eggs are the hook — children will play it repeatedly just to lift them.
