Crokinole Championship Board

A game of flicking small discs at other small discs, which is a description that does it no justice whatsoever.

Crokinole came out of Ontario in the 1870s and has been quietly refusing to go away ever since. It is a round wooden board with a raised lip, eight pegs guarding a central hole, and two sets of discs. You flick with a finger. That is the whole apparatus, and it has needed no revision in a hundred and fifty years. This is Jenjo's full-size championship board — a serious piece of timber rather than a novelty, and the sort of thing that ends up permanently on a table rather than back in a cupboard.

The rule that makes it work: if your opponent has a disc on the board, you must hit it. No quietly parking in the twenty-hole while they are not looking. So the game alternates between careful defensive placement and increasingly ambitious ricochets, and the twenty-hole in the middle — worth twenty, sinks the disc out of play — sits there tempting you into shots you cannot make. Learned in a minute, never quite mastered.
