Azul with one opponent, which removes the excuse that somebody else took the tile you wanted.

Michael Kiesling's tile-drafting game rebuilt for exactly two. The familiar loop is intact — take all tiles of one colour from a factory display, push the rest to the centre, place them or take penalties — but the two-player version adds a layer: you also decide the pattern the tiles will be laid into, rather than working to a fixed board.

That change matters more than it sounds. In the original you are drafting against a fixed target; here you are choosing the target as well, so a bad draft can sometimes be repurposed rather than eaten as penalty points. Thirty to forty-five minutes, and it holds up to repeat play better than most two-player abstracts because the pattern decisions keep the openings fresh.

Perfect for: a couple who already own Azul and have worked out that the four-player chaos was hiding how good they both are.
