The dawn of the Roman Eggpublic, and the Pondifex has handed you a riverside village with instructions to make a metropolis of it. You plant vineyards, open bathhouses, throw up palisade walls and, if things go well, commission the Colosseum. What sort of city it turns into is your call: a centre of trade, a military power, a luxurious urban sprawl, or a monument-builder trying to stay on good terms with the gods.

The structure is the clever part. At the end of each era the Gallic tribes arrive, besiege you, and force a rebuild — so the game is played out more than once on the same ground, each era bringing newer Roman innovations and leaving the old foundations underneath. An early city is never a permanent one, which makes planning for the demolition roughly as important as planning the build. Reid Marshall and Jack Reboul designed it, and it stretches from one player to six.

Perfect for: Anyone who has knocked through a wall at home and immediately started sketching the next one.
